There were no tears when Sharon Singleton got called into her boss' office to be told her job had been eliminated. Those came later.
While Singleton, one of 11 employees let go by the city of Lathrop, Calif., took a day off to figure out her next step, her colleague was quietly deciding to give up her own job to save someone else's.
Patricia "Patti" Overy, a mother of four, said she too was shocked by the layoffs, which claimed two members of the close-knit finance department where she had done accounting work for seven years. Her job was spared.
"I started kind of doing a little soul searching and looking at my situation," Overy said, "and went home and talked with my husband."
She and her husband, a city worker in nearby Tracy, Calif., talked about their finances and their children -- one teenager, a 7-year-old and twin 4-year-olds. They talked about health insurance and the job market. And then they decided together that Overy should give up her job and let someone else take it.
She then requested a meeting with her boss and City Manager Cary Keaten and asked to be laid off.
"I thought I could cope a little better with the loss of a job for awhile than any of my other co-workers," she said.
Overy said she hadn't been considering leaving her job or even looking for a new job when the layoffs were announced. But at 40 years old, she knew she'd have an easier time re-entering the job market than someone who was older -- someone like Singleton.
Overy didn't know her job would be going to Singleton when she offered to leave city hall -- only that her job would go either to Singleton, a city employee for six years, or another middle-aged woman who had worked for the city for 15 years.
Singleton, 63, said she returned to work two days after being laid off and quickly was whisked into the boss' office and told about Overy's offer.
"I was flabbergasted, of course. Just total shock, just kind of stood there," she said. "Then yes, had some tears."
Overy said she was sitting at her desk that day when Singleton came up to her and said, "What are you doing?"
"It was very emotional," Overy said.

Man Donates 100,000 Trees In Memory of Father

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Middle Tennessee man is giving away 100,000 trees to honor his father and to make the state a greener place to live.
Chris Clark's life is deeply rooted in his love for trees.
"Can't tell you how many trees I've looked at in my life," he said. "I mean they do so much more than provide us with the aesthetic beauty."
Clark inherited that love from his father, Steve Clark, who founded the family's landscape engineering business, Steve Clark & Associates.
His father died six years ago, on the first day of spring.
Clark said, "I can't remember a time in my life where he wouldn't ask me, ‘Do you know why I do what I do?' Of course I knew, but I would say, ‘Why?' and he would say, ‘I do it for you, for your children and their children.'"
To honor his father and celebrate the business' 35th anniversary, Clark has decided to share his love of trees with his fellow Tennesseans.
Eight different tree species have been delivered to more than 10 distribution centers across the state and each county will get 600 to 1,000 trees.
To plant the trees, Clark aims to get volunteers, children, public and private developments, universities, and others involved in the grassroots effort.
"I haven't asked for any money from anybody. I'm trying to do this by myself. My sponsorship is bodies. It's Tennesseans going out and planting these trees," he said.
Doug Hoskin with the Cumberland River Compact is taking a couple thousand of the trees to plant along local stream banks.
"Right away, those trees may not seem that significant," Hoskin said, "but later on, you're basically planting something that is going to be there for generations."
It's more about growing environmentally-conscious people than it is about growing trees.
"The trees are really just a symbol, it's a way for people to put aside something for a minute and think about something bigger than them selves," Clark said.

Chile' EarthQuake May Have Shortened Days

(CNN) -- The massive earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday may have shifted Earth's axis and created shorter days, scientists at NASA say.
The change is negligible, but permanent: Each day should be 1.26 microseconds shorter, according to preliminary calculations. A microsecond is one-millionth of a second.
A large quake shifts massive amounts of rock and alters the distribution of mass on the planet.
When that distribution changes, it changes the rate at which the planet rotates. And the rotation rate determines the length of a day.
"Any worldly event that involves the movement of mass affects the Earth's rotation," Benjamin Fong Chao, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said while explaining the phenomenon in 2005.
Scientists use the analogy of a skater. When he pulls in his arms, he spins faster.
That's because pulling in his arms changes the distribution of the skater's mass and therefore the speed of his rotation.
Richard Gross, a geophysicist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, used a computer model to determine how the magnitude 8.8 quake that struck Chile on February 27 may have affected Earth.

He determined that the quake should have moved Earth's figure axis about 3 inches (8 centimeters). The figure axis is one around which Earth's mass is balanced. That shift in axis is what may have shortened days.
Such changes aren't unheard of.

College Students asked to Trade Their Bibles for Porn!

A student group at the university called The Atheist Agenda is reviving its Bibles-for-porn program, called "Smut for Smut," for three days beginning March 1, according to a report from San Antonio's KENS-TV.
"The idea is that religious texts are so appalling," said Atheist Agenda group member Brian Talker in a 2006 interview with UTSA student publication The Independent. "They are so full of genocide, misogyny and ludicrous ideas that far overshadow any banal common-sense platitudes like loving thy neighbor, that you are better off having porn, which isn't nearly as smutty."
A current member of the group told KENS the program is also meant as a slap against religious leaders and the "hypocrisy" of their condemnations of pornography.
"They've been going and rallying against pornography for the longest time," the unidentified student said, "and the disgusting, depraved acts that are within the Bible, Koran and Vedas completely outnumber any [faults] of any pornographic image."
Other students, however, have expressed outrage.
"As a Christian myself, I just take offense to it," one student told the TV station.
"Did they really do that?" asked another. "It kinda made me want to cry, it really did."
University officials have stated that the controversy over the poster and program boils down to protected freedom of speech.
UTSA spokesman David Gabler told KENS, "We are a marketplace of free ideas here at UTSA, and our students have all [the] constitutional rights afforded to all individuals in the United States."
The Atheist Agenda, founded by students in 2005, launched its first Smut for Smut program in December of that year.
The then-president of The Atheist Agenda, Thomas Jackson, told MSNBC he thought the swap program presented a fair trade:
"Well, first of all, you know, pornography gets a lot of negative press, and it's smut. A lot of it really is," Jackson said. "And we wanted to make the comparison between that and the smut that is religious scripture, or a lot of it, you know. The stuff that says a woman is worth half a man, the things that say, you know, you should beat children.
"These things aren't acceptable in our society," he continued, "and if pornography is not acceptable, then these things surely aren't. At the very least, what we're doing is trading something that's very, very bad for something that's only moderately bad."
In its first Smut for Smut campaign, the San Antonio Express News reports, the atheist group avoided legal problems by placing the explicit magazines in envelopes and storing them in a box under a table. Students also checked IDs to ensure recipients were 18 or older and gave instructions not to view the material in the commons area.
Also in 2005, a rival Christian group established their own booth across the plaza from The Atheist Agenda and offered materials denouncing negative effects of pornography use.
This year, opposing signs have been posted in the same campus lobby, immediately next to the "free porn" poster, and KESN reports websites rallying against the program have already drawn thousands of members.

High School Students Given Survey On How They Lost Their Virginity

A team of lawyers who advocate for parental rights is working with parents whose children attend Ventura High School in Southern California to raise a formal objection after teachers had students fill out a survey on sex with questions such as "Are you sexually active" and "If not, why not?"
Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute, said the first step will be to file an administrative complaint.
"The parents have tried to reason with school officials about this, but so far administrators have failed to grasp that giving the students this survey without prior written notice and consent was illegal," he said.
The survey was reported in the student Cougar Press in December. The report apparently was not included as part of the paper's ordinary online presentation, officials said, but was obtained by a parent who posted the pages only for other parents to see.
The newspaper, in addition to the sex survey results, included a page of photographs of students revealing what songs put them "in the mood," a sex crossword puzzle and other advocacy for being sexually active.
A school spokesman said officials could not comment.
Dacus told WND schools should know that parents need to be able to trust their schools for the education system to work.
"When parental trust is breached, then school districts end up losing that participation," he said. "If school districts … want to be successful, they have to respect the rights of parents and not be caught doing things behind the backs of parents."
He said the primary issue is that a state law forbids such sex surveys without parental knowledge.
He said the problem only was revealed because a student took a copy home, in violation of instructions she was given, and some parents found out.
The questions included:
"The school allowed the use of instructional time to administer the survey and the teachers then collected it and handed it over to the newspaper," said parent John Silva, who obtained a copy of the newspaper from a concerned student.
"Because the sex survey was given without prior written notice and subsequent written consent by the parents or guardians, the school violated the law," said Kevin Snider, chief counsel of the Pacific Justice Institute.
"By facilitating the newspaper to conduct the survey, we feel the school was complicit in violating the rights of the parents," said Julie Wilson, a parent of a high school student.

Obama Administration To Hold Meeting with Atheist Anti-Religion Hate Groups

2 College Students Held at Gun Point While Simulating Homeless Experience
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Paul Bowers and Matt Wolfer are seniors at the University of South Carolina. The pair wanted to take part in a unique social experiment by becoming homeless for one week.
On Friday night, they tried out a test run. However, they got more than they bargained for on the test.
"One of the guys pulled out a shotgun," said Bowers.
Bowers and Wolfer say they were robbed shortly before dozing off to sleep underneath a gazebo in the park by the corner of Blossom Street and Pickens.
They expected to experience what a night in the cold would feel like, but what they experienced was much more severe.
"These three guys come in through that gate down there," said Bowers. "When they were in a few feet of the gazebo, one of them said something to the effect of 'What you got?'"
"Weren't quite sure what was going on until we saw the guns and realized more of their intent," said Wolfer.
That's when things quickly spiraled.
"He had it pointed at me at my chest," said Bowers, describing the suspect holding a gun to him. "They're asking for cell phones, wallets, we don't have anything."
"I heard Paul get slapped and then shoved," said Wolfer.
"Matt looked over and he got pistol whipped a couple times," said Bowers.
"At that point, they realized we really didn't have anything so they ran off," said Wolfer.
Since they didn't bring cell phones, it took a while before they were able to call police.
"What we experienced Friday night is something that happens all the time to homeless people," said Bowers.
Kentucky Middle School Student Suspended for Saying NO To Drugs!

The girl did not bring the prescription drug to her Jeffersonville, IN school, nor did she take it, but she admits that she touched it and in Greater Clark County Schools that is drug possession.
Rachael Greer said it happened on Feb. 23 during fifth period gym class at River Valley Middle School when a girl walked into the locker room with a bag of pills.
"She was talking to another girl and me about them and she put one in my hand and I was like, ‘I don't want this,' so I put it back in the bag and I went to gym class," said Rachael.
The pills were the prescription ADHD drug, Adderall. Patty Greer, Rachael's mother, said she and her husband are proud of their daughter for turning down drugs, just like she's been taught for years by DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) instructors at school.
"I'm proud her conscience kicked in and she said, ‘No, I'm not taking this. Here you can have it back,'" Patty Greer said.
But just saying no didn't end the trouble for Rachael. During the next period, an assistant principal came and took Rachael out of class. It turned out the girl who originally had the pills and a few other students got caught. That's when the assistant principal gave Rachael a decision.
"We're suspending you for five days because it was in your hand," said Rachael.
After hearing the news, Patty Greer went to school officials.
"He said she wrote it down on a witness statement and she had told the truth, he said she was very, very honest and he said he was sorry he had to do it but it was school policy," said Patty Greer.
According to Greater Clark County Schools district policy, even a touch equals drug possession and a one week suspension.
"The fact of the matter is, there were drugs on school campus and it was handled, so there was a violation of our policy," said Martin Bell, COO of Greater Clark County Schools.
We wanted to know what would have happened if Rachael had told a teacher right away. Bell said the punishment would not have been any different. District officials say if they're not strict about drug policies no one will take them seriously.
"That's not a good policy," said Patty Greer. "We're teaching our kids if you say no to drugs you're going to get punished, it's not right."

"Safe School" Czar seeks Transgender School Goals

President Obama's 'safe schools' czar, Kevin Jennings, sees his transgender plans for public and private schools within reach in a move developing in the state of Maine.
A hearing is scheduled next week on a proposal before the Maine Human Rights Commission to make allowances statewide for 'transgender' students. An organization founded by Jennings is behind the effort, according to a new report.
The plan essentially would instruct schools to allow boys who say they are transgender to use girls' facilities, such as restrooms and locker rooms, and vice versa.
Mass Resistance, a Massachusetts organization that works to counteract the advance of homosexual activism, has documented in a new report that the Jennings-launched "Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network" "has played a key role in the nightmare plan to transgenderize restrooms in Maine's schools."
The newspaper report said representatives from several "gay and lesbian" groups were involved in a Dec. 15 workshop with the Human Rights Commission on the guidelines.
"One of them was Peter Rees of the Downeast Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network [GLSEN] based in Ellsworth," the report said. "Rees said people who oppose rights for transgender students – such as allowing them to use locker rooms with people who are biologically of the opposite sex — fear something 'that just isn’t borne out in reality.'"
The Mass Resistance report noted Rees said, "What do they think is going to happen? That boy who is identifying as a girl is not going to be displaying herself in a girls' locker room. She's going to be acting as much like a girl as possible and being very modest."
But Mass Resistance wondered just what that means.
"'She' – meaning a boy – will be 'acting … like a girl … and being very modest.' But wait! We thought we weren’t supposed to stereotype on the basis of gender!? How confusing!" the Mass Resistance report said.
The organization also cited a 2008 report to the governor in Maine from the "LGBT Youth Commission," which cited GLSEN as an authoritative source on "what needs to be done in the schools."
"Maine's 2005 anti-discrimination law – covering the essentially undefined revolutionary concepts 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identity or expression' – has opened the door to the horror of boys using girls' restrooms and locker rooms (and vice versa), and playing on opposite-sex sports teams, in schools," Mass Resistance said.
The report also cited an incident in which a GLSEN-Boston board member talked to a classroom of third-graders about a student transitioning to "become a woman."
"'Safe Schools Czar' Jennings was one of the masterminds of this insanity being foisted upon young children across the country," the Mass Resistance report said. "He founded GLSEN shortly after his participation in the 1987 gay march on Washington. He apparently also participated in the 1993 gay march on the capitol, which was the first big event to push 'gender identity' non-discrimination alongside 'gay and lesbian rights' demands."
Last May, WND broke the news of Jennings' federal appointment to oversee "safety" in the nation's public schools after he had boasted of using the theme to promote homosexuality and other alternative sexual lifestyles to students.

The report also cited an incident in which a GLSEN-Boston board member talked to a classroom of third-graders about a student transitioning to "become a woman."
"'Safe Schools Czar' Jennings was one of the masterminds of this insanity being foisted upon young children across the country," the Mass Resistance report said. "He founded GLSEN shortly after his participation in the 1987 gay march on Washington. He apparently also participated in the 1993 gay march on the capitol, which was the first big event to push 'gender identity' non-discrimination alongside 'gay and lesbian rights' demands."
Last May, WND broke the news of Jennings' federal appointment to oversee "safety" in the nation's public schools after he had boasted of using the theme to promote homosexuality and other alternative sexual lifestyles to students.
