65% of U.S. Christian adults have elements of Eastern faiths and New Age thinking

Going to church this Sunday? Look around.

The chances are that one in five of the people there find "spiritual energy" in mountains or trees, and one in six believe in the "evil eye," that certain people can cast curses with a look — beliefs your Christian pastor doesn't preach.

In a Catholic church? Chances are that one in five members believe in reincarnation in a way never taught in catechism class — that you'll be reborn in this world again and again.

Elements of Eastern faiths and New Age thinking have been widely adopted by 65% of U.S. adults, including many who call themselves Protestants and Catholics, according to a survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life released Wednesday.

"Mixing and matching practices and beliefs is as much the norm as it is the exception," Pew's Alan Cooperman says. "Are they grazing, sampling, just curious? We really don't know."

Even so, says Pew researcher Greg Smith, "these findings all point toward a spiritual and religious openness — not necessarily a lack of seriousness."

Among the findings:

•26% of those who attend religious services say they do so at more than one place occasionally, and an additional 9% roam regularly from their home church for services.

•28% of people who attend church at least weekly say they visit multiple churches outside their own tradition.

•59% of less frequent church attendees say they attend worship at multiple places.

The survey of 2,003 adults Aug. 11-27 has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. It measures Protestants, Catholics and the unaffiliated; there were not enough people of other faiths surveyed for analysis.

"For an extremely long time, most of us thought belonging or membership or home church was monogamous, even if it was serial monogamy, because we all know about church-switching," says sociologist of religion Scott Thumma, a professor at the Hartford Institute for Religion Research in Hartford, Conn. "Today, the individual rarely finds all their spiritual needs met in one congregation or one religion."

Pew says two in three adults believe in or cite an experience with at least one supernatural phenomenon, including:

•26% find "spiritual energy" in physical things.

•25% believe in astrology.

•24% say people will be reborn in this world again and again.

•23% say yoga is a "spiritual practice."

"One hundred years ago, it would have been 'spiritualism.' They wouldn't have known what yoga was but might have been attracted to the 'New Thought' of the time," Mohler says.

His former classmate giggles at that. She's an ordained minister in the progressive United Church of Christ and leads the Interfaith Family Project, which meets for weekly worship at a Silver Spring, Md., high school.

Jarvis, of Takoma Park, Md., also studies with Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh and finds a spiritual dimension in yoga.

"I don't do astrology, but my mother, who grew up in Birmingham, Ala., and was a staunch Baptist all her life, looked at her horoscope daily and totally believed it," Jarvis says.

Jarvis says her late mother, like 49% of adults in the Pew survey, also had a moment of "religious or spiritual awakening."

"My mother feared for years that I was no longer saved, but just two days before she died, she had an epiphany," Jarvis says. "She said she was 'told' in a spiritual experience to put aside all religious and political differences and just love each other. That was her blessing to me, and that's what I'm doing."

Regina Roman of Alexandria, Va., calls herself "a very grounded Episcopalian" who's active in her church. But, she says, "I'm also stretching the boundaries of how we are to be here and now in this day, age and culture."

She leads pilgrimages to Egypt, New Mexico and Ireland to help travelers discover the truths and visions in Coptic, Native American and Celtic traditions. Roman celebrated the winter solstice with a home ceremony for guests to delight in the sun's gifts.

"We are all in relationship with the cosmos. We need to honor that," says Roman, who doesn't see herself crossing barriers but rather "coming full circle" with ancient ideas.

"People have always mixed religions, either in ignorance or willfully," says Stephen Prothero, director of the Graduate Division of Religious and Theological Studies at Boston University.

The faith-mixing trend has been building; other surveys in the past two years have touched on the swirling, unbounded paths of believers:

•Forty-seven percent to 59% of Americans have changed religions at least once, a Pew survey in April found. The top reasons for most: Their spiritual needs weren't being met, or they liked another faith more or changed religious or moral beliefs.

•The percentage of people who call themselves Christian has dropped more than 11% in a generation, and so many people declined any religious label that the "Nones," now 15% of the USA, are the third-largest "religious" group after Catholics and Baptists, according to the American Religious Identification Survey last March.

•Despite Americans' overwhelming allegiance to someone they call God (92%), in Pew's 2008 U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, 70% said "many religions can lead to eternal life," and 68% said "there's more than one true way to interpret the teachings of my religion."

•Most (55%) say a guardian angel has protected them from harm, and 52% believe in prophetic dreams, according to surveys by Baylor University released in 2006 and 2008.

JMC Ministries Response

It has been prophesied that there will be a great falling away, even from the very elect.

Matthew 24:24
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.

So this is no surprise to me that this is happening. The body of Christ needs to wake up and teach against these false doctrines that are going around. Too many churches seem to be afraid to speak up against these acts, and others are incorporating them into their services and daily lives.

The scriptures are very clear about this. That we should remove any hint of sin from the church and that we then teach only the truth found in the text of the Bible. That we are not to add or take away anything from the Holy Word.

Christians it is time to repent of our ways as the whole body of Christ and remove this speck from our own eyes so we can remove it from others later.

I pray that God continues to reveal Himself to the people, and that we turn back from our wicked ways.

New study: More Democrats than Republicans believe in ghosts, talking with the dead, fortunetellers

By: Byron York

A new study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life reveals some startling differences between Republicans and Democrats on issues of spirituality and supernatural phenomenon.

"Many Americans Mix Multiple Faiths," reports that a significant number of Americans practice a mixture of religious beliefs, and "many also blend Christianity with Eastern or New Age beliefs such as reincarnation, astrology and the presence of spiritual energy in physical objects." The report is not specifically about partisan differences, but the results of the study are broken down by party affiliation, among many other categories. And the news on that front is that Democrats are far more likely to believe in supernatural phenomenon than Republicans.

"Conservatives and Republicans report fewer experiences than liberals or Democrats communicating with the dead, seeing ghosts and consulting fortunetellers or psychics," the Pew study says. For example, 21 percent of Republicans report that they have been in touch with someone who is dead, while 36 percent of Democrats say they have done so. Eleven percent of Republicans say they have seen a ghost, while 21 percent of Democrats say so. And nine percent of Republicans say they have consulted a fortuneteller, while 22 percent of Democrats have.

There's more. Seventeen percent of Republicans say they believe in reincarnation, while 30 percent of Democrats do. Fourteen percent of Republicans say they believe in astrology, while 31 percent of Democrats do. Fifteen percent of Republicans say they view yoga as a spiritual practice, while 31 percent of Democrats do. Seventeen percent of Republicans say they believe in spiritual energy, while 30 percent of Democrats do.

There are some areas in which the two partisan groups are similar. When Pew asked respondents whether they have had a religious or mystical experience, 50 percent of Republicans said yes, as did 50 percent of Democrats. But overall, there are sizable disparities.

"Having been in touch with a dead person is more common among women than men," the report says. "Women are also twice as likely to have consulted a fortuneteller or psychic. Blacks report more experience feeling in touch with the dead than whites or Hispanics. But they resemble whites and Hispanics on other items, such as encounters with a ghost or consulting a fortuneteller."

A 2007 rally in Rome to demand an end to the persecution of Christians in the Middle East that has forced thousands to flee the region,

About one third of the world's nations, accounting for almost 70 percent of global population, lacks religious freedom, according to a new survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

Pew reports:

Global Restrictions on Religion, a new study by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life, finds that 64 nations - about one-third of the countries in the world - have high or very high restrictions on religion. But because some of the most restrictive countries are very populous, nearly 70 percent of the world's 6.8 billion people live in countries with high restrictions on religion, the brunt of which often falls on religious minorities.

Some restrictions result from government actions, policies and laws. Others result from hostile acts by private individuals, organizations and social groups. The highest overall levels of restrictions are found in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran, where both the government and society at large impose numerous limits on religious beliefs and practices. But government policies and social hostilities do not always move in tandem. Vietnam and China, for instance, have high government restrictions on religion but are in the moderate or low range when it comes to social hostilities. Nigeria and Bangladesh follow the opposite pattern: high in social hostilities but moderate in terms of government actions.

Among all regions, the Middle East-North Africa has the highest government and social restrictions on religion, while the Americas are the least restrictive region on both measures. Among the world's 25 most populous countries, Iran, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan and India stand out as having the most restrictions when both measures are taken into account, while Brazil, Japan, the United States, Italy, South Africa and the United Kingdom have the least.

Unemployed In Kentucky Rally In Protest of Congress Not Extending Unemployment Benefits

Click to read full story from Fox 41

By: Rachel Collier - rcollier@fox41.com

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB-Fox 41)--Unemployment benefits are running out for thousands, and some Kentuckians are lashing out at a senator they are blaming for the problem.

Some held a rally together to get Washington's attention right outside of Senator Mitch McConnell's office Wednesday.

Protesters cheer as cars roll by and honk, and for them, the more honks the better. They want their message heard loud and clear: "Can you hear us Senator McConnell? Can you hear us?" they chant. They want Senator Mitch McConnell and other Republicans to stop blocking an extension of unemployment benefits.

Brenda Johnson was laid off sixteen months ago, and her benefits have just now run out. "It's so hard right now to find a job, you know, I'm not used to this. I don't want to be beggin' people."

A large group of unemployed workers and labor activists rallied outside McConnell's office, and say they are fed up. "I call for solidarity!" one woman shouted through a megaphone.

"He don't have to worry about where his next meal is or how he's going to pay a bill," said Johnson.

"Without that pay right there, people have to be concerned about being able to keep their homes, being able to feed their families, and the continuation of life," said protester Kirk Gillenwaters, "but unfortunately Mitch doesn't see fit to extend these benefits and the toll it's taking on the people across the state of Kentucky and the United States."

A small group actually tried to go and talk to the senator. They were able to speak to a spokesperson who said McConnel is in support of extending benefits, but in a fiscally responsible manner. "What we're not willing to do," said the senator in a previous statement, "is use worthwhile programs as an excuse to burden our children and grandchildren with an even bigger national debt than we've got."

Below is our JMC LIVE Video Showing How The Unemployment Statistics Are Not Accurate and That the number of unemployed people are much higher than what you are being told

The protesting and people riling up like this is only going to get worse. As more and more men and women lose their benefits and still cannot find work. They will grow more and more desperate to feed and house their families. If we don't help these people who are struggling and are adamantly trying to find work with no success then these people will be forced into drastic measures. Crime will rise, murders, and suicides are going to grow and people will start to lose all hope. We must as the United States Of America help them.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Worker Has Worries For Gulf Coast Workers Health

Click to read full story from CNN

Anchorage, Alaska (CNN) -- Two decades ago, Roy Dalthorp helped clean up the rocky shores of Prince William Sound after the tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground, producing what was then the largest oil spill in U.S. history.

Today, with that record surpassed by the 11-week-old disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Dalthorp struggles to breathe. He coughs, and his failing eyes sometimes tear up uncontrollably.

Dalthorp told CNN that he was "slowly poisoned" during the Alaska cleanup effort -- and he says some of those now working to clean up the BP spill off Louisiana and neighboring states are risking the same fate.

BP says it is working with federal health and environmental regulators to make sure cleanup workers are protected from the hazards of the Gulf spill. But observers like Rikki Ott, an environmental activist who studied the Exxon Valdez spill, said cleanup workers in the Gulf are showing "the exact identical symptoms down here that we had 21 years ago."

Dalthorp says his troubles started when the then-out-of-work oil worker joined the Exxon Valdez cleanup effort. For six weeks, he lived and worked aboard a ship that ran boilers to heat sea water. The 120- to 140-degree water was used to blast crude off the shoreline, and it left plumes of oily-smelling steam in the surrounding air.

"I had no choices, because I was behind on my house payments, and no health insurance," he said.

Soon he began to cough. Teams from the Environmental Protection Agency were monitoring the cleanup, but "nobody ever checked with us," Dalthorp said.

Tanker owner Exxon paid to study the effects of the spill on nearly every creature that came into contact with the 11 million gallons that were dumped into Prince William Sound -- except people.

"Clams and mussels, to fish and otters, to ducks and eagles, and even deer and bears," said Anchorage lawyer Dennis Mestas, who represented another worker who was involved in the cleanup. "But they never studied what this oil was doing to the workers -- to the human beings in Prince William Sound."

Mestas warns history may be repeating itself thousands of miles away in the Gulf of Mexico, with evidence of workers getting sick, and their medical records being controlled by BP.

United Kingdom: Man Discovers Largest Roman Coin Collection In British History

click to read full story from BBC News

One of the largest ever finds of Roman coins in Britain has been made by a man using a metal detector.

The hoard of more than 52,000 coins dating from the 3rd Century AD was found buried in a field near Frome in Somerset.

The coins were found in a huge jar just over a foot (30cm) below the surface by Dave Crisp, from Devizes in Wiltshire.

"I have made many finds over the years, but this is my first major coin hoard," he said.

After his metal detector gave a "funny signal", Mr Crisp says he dug down 14in before he found what had caused it.

"I put my hand in, pulled out a bit of clay and there was a little Radial, a little bronze Roman coin. Very, very small, about the size of my fingernail."

Mr Crisp reported the find to the authorities, allowing archaeologists to excavate the site.

Since the discovery in late April, experts from the Portable Antiquities Scheme at the British Museum have been working through the find.

The coins were all contained in a single clay pot. Although it only measured 18in (45cm) across, the coins were packed inside and would have weighed an estimated 160kg (350lb).

Letter From Senator Sherrod Brown in Support of Expanding Veteran Educational & Employment Benefits

Letter From Senator Sherrod Brown in Support of Expanding Veteran Educational & Employment Benefits

Dear Mr. Caverley:

Thank you for sharing your support for expanding educational and employment benefits for veterans.

Providing for our veterans must be a clear and unmistakable priority, and we must ensure that our men and women in uniform have adequate access to educational and employment opportunities. Ensuring access to training and educational programs will enhance a veteran’s skill set and foster greater employment opportunities in a competitive job market.

To increase such opportunities for our veterans, I have introduced the Veterans Education Tuition Support Act which would provide additional educational assistance under the Montgomery GI Bill to veterans pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering, or math.

In addition, I was a proud cosponsor of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2007. This legislation would amend federal veterans’ benefits provisions to expand educational assistance to include those veterans who have served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. In recognition of the greater need for flexibility in a post 9/11 military world, it includes increases in available funding and allows for the pursuit of approved educational and training programs while on active duty. This legislation became public law on June 30, 2008.

The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act of 2010 (S.3447) will expand the reach of the Montgomery GI Bill and afford veterans the educational benefits they've earned. As the Senate considers this legislation, I will certainly keep your strong support in mind

In addition to the services and benefits afforded through legislation, you may consider contacting a local VA facility or VFW to explore available employment resources. Also, www.hirevets.gov

is a federal government site designed to provide a comprehensive approach to matching veterans with employment opportunities.

As a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I will continue working to ensure that veterans receive the benefits they have earned. As these issues come before the Senate, I will be sure to keep your views in mind. Thank you again for writing me.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown
United States Senator

Hawaii has shown they still believe in traditional marriage! Veto of House Bill 444!

Link to original article

"There has not been a bill I have contemplated more or an issue I have thought more deeply about during my eight years as governor than House Bill 444 and the institution of marriage," Lingle said at a news conference. "I have been open and consistent in my opposition to same-sex marriage, and find that House Bill 444 is essentially same-sex marriage by another name."

"It would be a mistake to allow a decision of this magnitude to be made by one individual or a small group of elected officials," she said.

"What she did was very just, and I'm very happy about it," said Jay Amina, 50, of Waianae. "It sends a good message throughout the state of Hawaii — that our people here on the islands are standing for traditional marriage."

Five states — California, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington — grant essentially all the rights of marriage to same-sex couples without authorizing marriage itself. Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut and the District of Columbia permit same-sex marriage.

JMC Ministries Response

Hawaii & several other states have been continuing to uphold the values of traditional marriage. The Bible clearly shows that marriage is between a man & woman. In history the sexual acts of same sex couples have always been trying to destroy this mind set. When sin comes into the picture it wants to control, manipulate, and demean the true scriptural God given Word.

As Christians we are supposed to show love to all mankind. This can be done, even as hard as it is. But when it comes to marriage, this is a sacred act between man and woman.

I pray for these people who have been fooled that homosexuality is a lifestyle, and that they find the Lord's favor. Learning to trust in Him alone to help them resist the temptation of gay activity.

Wake up Christians! We need to assist them in their life journey in finding Christ & receiving the freedom that is found in Him. God wants to unite the Christian body and set free the captives!
